Climate Cleanup is a Dutch foundation working to reverse climate change through nature-based carbon dioxide removal. Their mission: remove 1,500 gigatons of CO2 by doubling nature, restoring the balance between what humanity emits and what natural systems can absorb.
Agriculture & Soil

Climate Cleanup Foundation is dedicated to removing CO2 from the atmosphere and oceans by fostering a regenerative economy. Founded in 2018 and based in Amsterdam, the foundation brings together entrepreneurs, scientists, and policymakers around one shared goal: scaling natural carbon removal solutions.
Their approach is systemic. Rather than running individual projects, Climate Cleanup builds the conditions for an entire sector to grow. They develop open carbon accounting standards (ONCRA), create certification protocols for carbon stored in buildings and soils, and connect a growing network of over 50 entrepreneurs working on nature-based solutions.
The foundation focuses on five pathways for removing carbon from the atmosphere: through trees and soils (Land Stored Carbon), through rock weathering (Rock Stored Carbon), through seaweed and ocean restoration (Ocean Stored Carbon), and through bio-based building materials (Construction Stored Carbon).
Climate Cleanup does not just aim to slow down climate change. Their vision is to actively reverse it by putting nature at the centre of a new economy.
Reducing emissions alone is no longer enough. Even if the world stopped all CO2 emissions today, there is already too much carbon in the atmosphere. To stabilise the climate, we need to actively remove CO2 and store it in natural systems.
Climate Cleanup addresses three interconnected challenges:
The carbon overshoot. There are roughly 1,500 gigatons of excess CO2 in the atmosphere. Removing it requires solutions that work at planetary scale, not just reducing what we add.
Underfunded solutions. Natural climate solutions can deliver over 30% of the climate solution needed by 2030, yet they receive less than 3% of global climate funding. Climate Cleanup works to close this gap.
From extractive to regenerative. The current economic system extracts value from nature. Climate Cleanup helps build a new model where carbon removal creates economic value, restores ecosystems, and supports local communities.
Every purchase through Terry can support Climate Cleanup's work in:
Developing open carbon removal standards that help entrepreneurs measure and monetise their impact
Advancing bio-based construction that stores carbon in buildings for decades
Supporting regenerative farmers growing crops like miscanthus and bamboo that capture CO2 in soils
Funding research into enhanced rock weathering, where minerals naturally absorb carbon
Scaling ocean-based solutions, from seaweed cultivation to sargassum cleanup
Contributions help fund the foundation's systemic work: building the standards, tools, and partnerships that allow nature-based carbon removal to grow from niche to mainstream.
Example impact from Terry:
€10 via Terry supports the development of open carbon accounting tools
€50 via Terry contributes to certification of carbon stored in a building project
€250 via Terry helps fund a pilot for regenerative farming or rock weathering
Climate Cleanup has built a strong track record as a pioneer in natural carbon removal:
Developed ONCRA, an open carbon removal accounting framework now used by over 50 entrepreneurs
Published the world's first open certification protocol for carbon stored in buildings
Hosted seven annual CDR Conferences, bringing together policymakers, entrepreneurs, and investors
Launched the first Construction Stored Carbon Certificates market, in partnership with Ballast Nedam Development
Contributed to the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework, adopted in December 2024
Initiated the Interreg ABC Project, connecting regenerative agriculture with bio-based construction across eight European regions
Partnered with organisations including Ballast Nedam Development, a.s.r. real estate, WWF Netherlands, and multiple Dutch provinces
Organised the Nationale Top Natuurlijke Koolstofvastlegging, bringing together policymakers and practitioners across the Netherlands
By supporting Climate Cleanup through Terry, you help:
Scale nature-based carbon removal from pilot projects to a fully functioning sector
Enable entrepreneurs to measure, verify, and sell the carbon they remove
Shift the construction industry towards bio-based materials that store carbon instead of emitting it
Accelerate policy frameworks that make natural carbon removal investable
Build a regenerative economy where removing CO2 is not a cost, but a source of value
Climate Cleanup Foundation (Stichting Climate Cleanup) is a registered ANBI (Public Benefit Organisation) in the Netherlands. The foundation is governed by an independent board, operates with transparent financial practices, and publishes annual reports.
The board receives no financial compensation. The team works on a principle of impact first and equal pay, with salaries capped at the Dutch modal level. All funds raised through Terry go directly to Climate Cleanup's mission: building the systemic conditions for nature-based carbon removal at scale.
