Since 1936, Het Groninger Landschap has safeguarded Groningen’s nature, landscapes, and heritage: ensuring that what’s protected today will still thrive tomorrow.
Since 1936, Het Groninger Landschap has protected the nature, landscapes, and cultural heritage of the province of Groningen. The foundation preserves these unique natural areas and historical monuments for future generations.
Through the Groninger Nature Fund (established in 2021), the foundation continues this mission by actively purchasing land and converting it into permanently protected nature. Ownership is key: the most reliable form of long-term conservation. Acquired lands are managed and developed as natural areas, while historical buildings and monuments are maintained and restored.
Where possible, the foundation opens its nature reserves and monuments to the public, ensuring that everyone can experience and enjoy Groningen’s landscapes.
Impact so far (2024):
🌿 84,000 m² of new nature secured through the Groninger Nature Fund
🐝 8,298 hectares of protected nature in total
🏰 54 national monuments maintained and restored
🌬️ 18 windmills preserved as part of Groningen’s cultural heritage
In a time of climate change and biodiversity loss, Groningen’s landscapes are under increasing pressure. By purchasing land, Het Groninger Landschap prevents it from being used for intensive agriculture or construction, allowing ecosystems to recover naturally.
Each contribution to the fund strengthens the connection between people and nature: ensuring that what makes Groningen beautiful today will still thrive tomorrow.
“The best protection is ownership. What we own, we care for, forever.”
— Het Groninger Landschap
Every purchase made through Terry helps the Groninger Nature Fund grow: literally.
For every €7.50 raised, one new square meter of Groningen’s nature is secured and restored.
Example impact conversion:
€15 = 2 m² protected
€75 = 10 m² restored and maintained
100 Terry users = enough to secure an entire new nature parcel
Together, we expand protected landscapes and keep Groningen’s nature in public hands.
Across Groningen, local volunteers, farmers, and communities are helping bring the Groninger Nature Fund to life, one plot at a time.
From the reclaimed meadows near the Reitdiep valley to restored peatlands around Westerwolde, each new parcel of land tells a story of regeneration and resilience. Volunteers plant native species, restore wetlands, and monitor bird populations: bringing biodiversity back to landscapes that once seemed lost.
These small, local efforts connect into something larger: a living network of protected ecosystems across the province. Together, they ensure that Groningen’s nature remains a shared legacy: for people, plants, and wildlife alike.
