Nature Today is the largest online nature news platform in the Netherlands. With daily reports from more than 40 nature organisations, governments and research institutes, it brings the latest developments in nature to millions of readers.
Agriculture & Soil

Nature Today has been publishing daily nature news since 2008, making it one of the longest-running and most widely read nature platforms in the Netherlands. Every day, biologists from more than 40 organisations, including Vogelbescherming Nederland, Naturalis and Wageningen University, share stories about wildlife, ecosystems, biodiversity and the changing natural world.
The platform's mission is clear: by actively and continuously informing the public about what is happening in nature, it strengthens people's connection to, knowledge of and appreciation for the natural world. This in turn motivates more people to actively contribute to monitoring, conservation and restoration.
Nature Today also organises citizen science programmes such as De Natuurkalender and the Muggenradar, involving thousands of people in observing and reporting on nature in their own surroundings.
The platform reaches millions of readers annually through its website, and many more through media coverage and social media. It publishes in both Dutch and English, with ambitions to grow into a truly international nature news platform.
The next generation is growing up with significantly less contact with nature than their parents and grandparents. Nature knowledge, once passed down through direct experience, is disappearing. This alienation is not just a cultural loss. It is a threat to future conservation efforts: people do not protect what they do not know.
Nature Today addresses three challenges:
Declining connection with nature Younger generations spend less time outdoors and have fewer opportunities to learn about the nature around them. The gap between people and nature is growing.
Accessibility of knowledge There is enormous ecological expertise within research institutes and nature organisations. But much of it stays within professional circles. Nature Today makes this knowledge accessible to everyone, every day.
Reaching new audiences Traditional nature reporting reaches an already interested audience. To grow the movement, new formats are needed that appeal to people who are not yet engaged, particularly younger readers.
This is where the cartoon project comes in. Cartoons make complex ecological stories visual, shareable and fun. They lower the barrier for younger audiences and give nature news a much greater reach on social media.
